Politicians and brewers have plans to add special vitamins to beer in order to stop alcohol-related brain damage. Scientists want to put thiamine, or vitamin B1, in Scotland’s lagers and ales. It would help prevent the brain disease Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, which affects the heaviest drinkers. The plan seems to have been rejected in the U.K. but the Scottish Executive health department has commissioned an advisory group to investigate.
